You can subscribe to the OnStar Safety & Security Plan for a fixed monthly fee. The Stolen Vehicle Assistance is one of several advanced features from the plan. When an unauthorized person gets behind the wheel of your registered vehicle, the Theft Alarm Notification will immediately come on. This function will only work if your car has a General Motors theft-deterrent system that's installed directly at the factory. The Theft Alarm Notification (TAN) will notify local police departments and other law enforcement agencies about the theft of your car. Using precise GPS coordinates that come from the navigation system or other built-in OnStar hardware, the OnStar Advisors will determine the real-time location of your stolen car. The GPS data gets promptly shared with authorities working on tracking your vehicle. If necessary, the OnStar Advisors will remotely decelerate the stolen car without causing any traffic disruptions and other hazards on the road.
The Remote Engine Block (REB) is another key technology in the OnStar Stolen Vehicle Assistance service. As the name suggests, the REB prevents a thief from starting the ignition system of your car. This function works particularly well with vehicles equipped with a push-button start system, which senses an electronic key fob in the cabin. The Remote Engine Block temporarily disables a compatible key fob that may have been stolen from you.
